David and I have been married (and monogamous) for over 9 years. We were handfasted on January 29, 2000 to mark the third aniversary of our engagement. For the past decade we have spent our lives living, playing, and — for a short part of it — working together.
There’s an eight year age difference between us, which doesn’t seem like much now that we’re in our thirties, but when I left my parent’s house at 17 to stay with him it was a pretty big deal for my folks. Like all girls who move out at a young age, I was looking for an escape.
We met at Kenpo class in the winter of 1996. He was wearing one of the many Marilyn Manson t-shirts from my collection of favorites. At the very next class, his nose was broken in a sparing match with one of the older Tae Kwon Do students. Then my car broke down and he offered to drive me home AND fix it. Little did I know that he was an ASE certified auto tech who could fix anything handed to him.
Speaking of hands, it wasn’t long after that he cut the tendon in his right hand while rebuilding a transmission at work. He needed surgery… two as it turns out because the pain medication caused involuntary muscle spasms that snapped the internal sutures. At the same time he elected to have the deviated septum in his nose repaired, so he was pretty messed up and out of work for several months while healing.
He would pick me up after school and we would spend hours at Denny’s over coffee and mozzarella sticks (back when you could still smoke in a restaurant). He took me shooting, bought me drinks at the goth club, I met his family, made friends with his dog… three months later he asked me to marry him and I’ve never looked back.
Not long after we were married he started devoting serious time and attention to an invention he came up with at the suggestion of a friend. We also started a home improvement project around the same time — which we’re still working on! LOL
That invention, though, has come a long way and now supports us and a daughter without me having to work. More on that story can be found here: http://www.ferret50.com/about_the_maker.html
When you’re done with that site, check out http://www.myspace.com/teamferret to learn more about him from his personal blog or set up a date to meet in person. He loves that!
